The Day of the Dollar

This Dutch documentary (with English subtitles) essentially explores the 'what if' scenario of a collapsing US dollar. This documentary should be all the more interesting to people after the S&P downgrade this year, and with the rumble of the sovereign debt crisis in Europe. While it is unlikely that the US dollar will be rejected en mass any time soon (given the absolute absence of any credible alternative; the Euro is not yet credible and is at risk, the Yuan is not at all appropriate in the absence of many more years of reform and freeing up, and outside of those two there really isn't a sensible alternative), and it remains the currency of universal denomination; it is still interesting to explore the possibility as an exercise.

VPRO Backlight and Dutch national newspaper NRC Handelsblad present this 'what if' scenario. What if the dollar collapses? Fiction meets facts in this 24 hour scenario. At 9AM a Singapore trader is ordered to sell a large amount of dollars, which sends off the enormous downfall of the dollar. This film shows the results for the world economy every following hour. It ends in Amsterdam, where the only currency accepted by a taxi driver is cigarettes... History seems to have caught up with this 2005 film, though in slow-motion... Includes interview with analyst Stephen Roach, Andy Xie, Maarten Schinkel, Cees Maas, Rob de Wijk and Kees Vendrik.
